VILLAGE OF CENTER
The Village of Center (established in 1901) has a population of 84 (census 2004) and is located in the center of Knox County. Knox County was established in 1857 and was named L'eu Qui Court, the French and Indian name meaning "Running Water". This refers to the present Niobrara River. The county name was changed to Knox in honor of General Knox of the Civil War fame by a statute passed on February 21, 1873.

Education
Knox County is one of the few rural counties to be able to boast having seven school districts among nine communities. Each has history of preparing students to be able to compete at all academic levels. In fact, Creighton Elementary and Secondary schools received the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award in keeping with the principles of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2003 and 2004.

Since Center is located in the center of the county, residents have the opportunity to attend school in Bloomfield, Creighton or Verdigre all of which are located from 10 to 14 miles from Center.

Center is also located near several colleges and universities including Wayne State College and Northeast Community College in Northeast Nebraska; Briar Cliff College and Morningside College in Iowa; and the University of South Dakota and Mount Mary College in South Dakota.

Tourism/Recreation
Center’s location is a prime reason for visitors to see what all Northeast Nebraska has to offer. There is an abundance of recreational opportunities and the drive to most is less than an hour away. The rolling hills and water of the Missouri and Niobrara river valleys contain a variety of wild game and fish for the hunter, fisherman and avid bird watcher. Deer, turkey, pheasant, quail and waterfowl inhabit the area in large numbers.  Hikers and cyclists will be thrilled with the scenery that awaits them. The number of well-maintained courses in the area will surprise the golfers. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, there are unlimited opportunities for camping with the Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area and the Niobrara State Park close by.

Other Area Attractions:
Winnetoon
The World's only Winnetoon is home to a mini-mall of historic old-west buildings and shopping. Winnetoon also holds many chainsaw carvings by their local "carving cowboy". Winnetoon is located 15 miles Northwest of Center.
Grove Trout Rearing Station
Located within the Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area, 28 miles southwest of Center, this hatchery raises over 200,000 trout on the crystal clear Verdigre Creek. Visitors can "feed the fish" in beautiful surroundings and learn more about this unique area at the information center.
State Parks:
Niobrara State Park | website
The breathtaking Niobrara river valley, home to Niobrara State Park, lies less than 21 miles to the North of Center. The park offers 15 cabins, modern camping facilities, a swimming pool, picnic shelters, boat ramps, and hiking and biking trails with scenery that is Nebraska at its finest.
Lewis & Clark State Recreation Area | website
Formed by Gavins Point Dam, Lewis & Clark Lake covers 32,000 acres and is a popular site for boating, camping and fishing in Northeast Nebraska. The lake is an easy 36 miles Northeast of Center. This state recreation area includes five areas on the south side of the lake: Weigand-Burbach, Miller Creek, Bloomfield, South Shore and Deep Water.

Willow Creek Recreation Area | website
Located 1 1/2 miles SW of Pierce, Willow Creek has 1,633 acres with a 700-acre lake. Facilities include: 100 camping pads, 64 with 30 amp electrical hookups, 19 with 50 amp electrical hookups. Picnic tables and shelters, fire grates, water, showers, modern restrooms, accessible fishing pier, archery field course, unsupervised swimming, two playgrounds and an 8-mile hiking/horseback trail around the lake. Seven rock jetties provide some fine fishing access.

Ashfall State Park | website | website
Only 27 miles southwest of Center is one of this countries greatest treasures. Nearly 12 million years ago, volcanic ash engulfed this ancient watering hole, entombing innumerable animals. National Geographic has called it the Pompeii of prehistoric animals. Because of its scientific importance, the 360-acre historical park between Orchard and Royal was acquired in 1987 and is a joint project of the Game and Parks Commission and the University of Nebraska State Museum. See paleontologists "dig" the site and prepare fossils unearthed. Interpretive facilities include a visitor center and rhino barn. Picnicking is available at Grove Lake WMA near Royal. Admission is charged in addition to the Park Entry Permit.
